The History of Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme’s story began in the 1930s. Legend has it that a young Vernon Rudolph, the man behind this famous donut brand, won the secret recipe for yeast-raised doughnuts in a poker game against a French chef in New Orleans.
He then rented a building in Old Salem, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and started selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts to grocery stores as a wholesaler. However, the irresistible aroma of the freshly made doughnuts began wafting out into the street, drawing in passersby who couldn’t resist asking if they could buy hot, fresh donuts.
Vernon saw an opportunity to create a retail business and decided to cut a hole in the building’s wall to sell directly to customers. Although Vernon passed away in 1976, his beloved Krispy Kreme brand still lives on today.
In 2001, Krispy Kreme opened its first international store in Canada, near Toronto, a success that paved the way for global expansion. By 2012, the brand had 500 stores outside the United States, and today, it boasts over 1,400 locations in more than 33 countries.
