History of Ben & Jerry’s

In 1978, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened their first ice cream shop in a converted gas station in Burlington, Vermont, with a $5 correspondence course on how to make ice cream from Penn State and a $12,000 investment (with $4,000 of that borrowed).

The business quickly thrived, and in 1979, Ben and Jerry celebrated the store’s first anniversary with the first Free Cone Day. The following year, they rented a space in an old coil factory on South Champlain Street in Burlington and began packaging their ice cream into pints for distribution to grocery stores and Mom & Pop shops along restaurant delivery routes, which Ben served from the back of his old car.

As Ben & Jerry’s ice cream became more popular, demand grew, leading the company to open its first franchised shop in Shelburne, Vermont, in 1981. The original gas station was later demolished to build a parking lot.

By the 2000s, Ben & Jerry’s became a wholly owned subsidiary of Unilever. Through a unique acquisition agreement, an independent Board of Directors was established to provide leadership focused on preserving and expanding the company’s social mission, brand integrity, and product quality. Today, the company’s ice cream business is as legendary as the euphoria its ice cream brings.
