What is Moana 2 about?

WARNING: SPOILERS! The plot of this sequel delves even further into Polynesian culture, addressing themes such as legacy, leadership, and connection with ancestors, and takes place three years after the events of the first movie.

Moana, now the leader of her community, receives an unexpected message from her ancestors, which leads her to embark on a new journey across the ocean to find answers and reconnect her people with their maritime heritage.

During her journey, Moana reunites with Maui, the demigod of wind and sea, who decides to join her on this dangerous mission. Together, they must face new enemies, such as the fearsome Kakamora and Nalo, the god of storms.

In her struggle to restore the lost island of Motufetu, Moana is struck by a lightning bolt from Nalo and is killed; however, the ocean and the spirits of her ancestors manage to bring her back to life. After this event, Moana becomes a demigoddess, just like Maui, gaining a form of immortality that will allow her to live for more than a thousand years.

Moana 2: Actors in the Movie

The animated movie, directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, and produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as Moana and Maui, respectively.

It also features several actors who reprise their roles for this second installment, along with others who join the story to bring new characters to life. Here’s the full cast:

  • Rachel House: Tala, Moana’s grandmother
  • Temuera Morrison: Chief Tui, Moana’s father
  • Nicole Scherzinger: Sina, Moana’s mother
  • Hualālai Chung
  • David Fane
  • Rose Matafeo

Will there be Moana 3?

So far, Disney has not confirmed a third part of Moana; however, some details of the sequel suggest that Moana 3 could become a reality (and it wouldn’t be surprising, since Moana 2 has already earned more than a billion dollars in revenue, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated movies of the year).

If you’ve already seen the second movie, you’ll know there’s a post-credit scene where Nalo promises to take revenge on Moana. Also, after the spirits of the ancestors bring Moana back to life, she becomes a demigoddess, which could lead to more adventures.

When would Moana 3 be released?

If it materializes, the third installment of Moana could take several years to arrive, as we must remember that the gap between the releases of the first two films was eight years.
