The order from United States President Donald Trump to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ has sparked controversy not only in Mexico but also in other countries, like Canada, which has already launched a counterproposal: calling it the ‘Gulf of Fragile Masculinity’.
Trump began promoting the name change days before taking office as President of the United States, believing it to be appropriate, as this gulf also extends into U.S. territory.
“We do most of the work, so we’ll change the name from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which is a beautiful and very appropriate name,” he said at the time.
Mexico immediately responded, rejecting this idea, stating that the name is internationally recognized. Now, Canada has also sent its response.

Canada proposes renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Fragile Masculinity
After the executive order signed by Trump on the first day of his presidency, January 20, the gulf on U.S. maps is already listed as ‘Gulf of America’.
In response, Canada stated that the name that best fits is ‘Gulf of Fragile Masculinity’. This, as a sort of reference to President Donald Trump. The idea quickly went viral on social media, with users supporting the implementation of that name.
“I’ve been told that Canadians are now calling it the ‘Gulf of Fragile Masculinity’. And I support it!” “They can call it whatever they want, for example, something that represents them: ‘Gulf of Crybaby Adults’ or ‘Gulf of Fragile Masculinity’” and “It’s incomprehensible that Google and the Coast Guard refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. What a deep weakness to capitulate to a narcissist. It’s, indeed, the Gulf of Fragile Masculinity,” were some of the comments.
What is fragile masculinity?
The term ‘fragile masculinity’ refers to attitudes that arise within a macho and patriarchal model, in which men are expected to be strong, invulnerable, self-sufficient, and to hide their emotions or fears.
A man with fragile masculinity feels a constant need to reaffirm his worth, demonstrate strength, and financial success. When he perceives a threat to his masculine identity, he often reacts aggressively.
Google Maps changes the name of the Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America
After the name change of the Gulf of Mexico took effect in the United States, Google announced that it would use ‘Gulf of America’ to refer to this gulf in its ‘Maps’ application.
Through a message on its official social media accounts, the company stated that this update would only apply in the United States, as it is the official name in the country.
“We’ve received some questions about names on Google Maps. We have a long-standing practice of applying name changes when they’ve been updated in official government sources,” it stated.
Why is it called the Gulf of Mexico?
Although the gulf is also bordered by other countries, it was Mexico that played a key role in its geographical naming. Its name comes from the extensive Mexican coastline surrounding it. During the Conquest era, Spanish explorers named this body of water in honor of the territory now known as Mexico, one of the most important regions at the time.
Which countries are in the Gulf of Mexico?
The Gulf of Mexico is the largest sheltered water basin of the Atlantic Ocean and is divided between three countries:
