What Are Executive Orders?

These are signed statements that outline the president’s directives on how the federal government should be managed. They may include specific instructions to federal agencies or requests for reports.

Executive orders do not require congressional approval and cannot be directly overturned by lawmakers. However, the Congress can hinder their implementation by cutting funds or establishing administrative obstacles.

When Would Trump’s Order to End Birthright Citizenship Take Effect?

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, issued an executive order aimed at ending automatic citizenship granted to children of undocumented immigrants.

According to the order, the constitutional amendment has been misinterpreted. Its implementation is set to take effect within 30 days, without retroactive application, meaning it would begin on February 19 or 20, 2025.

What Does Ending Birthright Citizenship Entail?

The measure would apply to future births and would prohibit the State Department from issuing passports to children of undocumented parents. Additionally, the Social Security Administration would not recognize them as U.S. citizens, restricting their access to fundamental rights and complicating their ability to work legally in the country.
