A woman in an apparent state of vulnerability entered a Starbucks on Michoacán Avenue, in the heart of Mexico City’s Condesa neighborhood, and threatened employees and customers with a knife. According to the Mexico City police, the woman brandished the weapon, causing panic among those present.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with patrons rushing to exit the premises while employees tried to defuse the situation until authorities arrived.
How did the authorities respond?
Mexico City’s Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported that police officers promptly arrived at the scene after receiving an emergency call. “The police detained a woman in an apparent vulnerable state who was threatening employees with a sharp object,” the SSC stated in a press release.
The woman, who appeared to have sustained several injuries, was assessed by paramedics before being taken into custody and presented to a Civic Judge. The police are investigating whether the injuries were self-inflicted or related to the incident.
While the company has not issued an official statement, it typically collaborates with local authorities to ensure the well-being of its employees and customers during such incidents.
