In the midst of the emergency caused by the multiple wildfires raging out of control in Southern California, Airbnb, through its Airbnb.org program, has announced that it will offer free and temporary accommodation to people displaced by the fires. This initiative aims to alleviate the situation for thousands of residents who have been forced to evacuate their homes due to the relentless advance of the flames, particularly in areas like Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and the San Fernando Valley.
Airbnb.org is a nonprofit organization founded by Airbnb, dedicated to providing emergency shelter during crises. In response to the California wildfires, the organization has partnered with 211 LA, the information and referral service for Los Angeles County, to connect evacuees with free stays offered by Airbnb hosts.
How does Airbnb’s free accommodation program work?
Airbnb.org works alongside local organizations to identify people with the greatest need for temporary shelter. In this case, 211 LA is identifying residents who have lost their homes or have been evacuated from areas such as Altadena, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Santa Monica, and Sylmar.
Those affected can request assistance through an intake form provided by 211 LA. The stays are completely free for guests and are funded by Airbnb.org and the generosity of Airbnb hosts.

- Eaton Canyon (Pasadena): A rapidly spreading fire that has created a “firestorm,” forcing thousands, including a senior residence, to evacuate.

How did the California wildfire start in 2025?
While investigations are still ongoing, it is believed that the strong and dry Santa Ana winds played a crucial role in the rapid spread of the fires.
Extreme dryness and high temperatures also contributed to the disaster. The Pacific Palisades fire began on January 7, and although the exact cause is under investigation, strong winds fanned the flames.
For the Eaton Canyon fire, it is believed to have started due to sparks from a nearby fire, exacerbated by the winds and dry vegetation.
What happened with the Pacific Palisades fire?
The Pacific Palisades fire is one of the most significant hotspots and has caused mass evacuations and considerable damage in this exclusive residential area of West Los Angeles. The cause of the Palisades fire is still under investigation, but strong winds and dry terrain have been key factors in its rapid expansion.
What is the state of emergency in California?
The governor of California has declared a state of emergency in response to the fires, enabling the mobilization of state and federal resources to combat the wildfires and assist affected communities.
How can I help if I’m not an Airbnb host?
Airbnb.org also accepts donations to fund emergency accommodations. 100% of donations go towards this effort. Additionally, you can support other local relief organizations and shelters working in the area.
How to become a host with Airbnb.org?
Hosts interested in offering free or discounted accommodations through Airbnb.org can register on the organization’s website. Airbnb does not charge service fees for these stays, and hosts receive damage protection and liability insurance with AirCover.
Airbnb.org has provided more than 1.6 million nights of accommodation to over 250,000 people in emergency situations worldwide. The organization has responded to disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes, demonstrating its commitment to humanitarian aid in times of crisis.
