What disorder does Joe Goldberg have?

The second part of the fourth season of You generated a lot of controversy by addressing the topic of erotomania, a disorder affecting Joe Goldberg.

The plot begins when Joe tries to track down Rhys Montrose, a man he does not know. However, what seems to be a search turns into a surprising friendship, in which Rhys confesses to being the killer of “Eat The Rich”. In the end, Joe accidentally kills Rhys, only to find that a different version of the young man immediately appears beside him.

It turns out that Goldberg was never friends with Rhys; all that time, he had been talking to an imaginary version of the mayoral candidate.

What is erotomania?

Erotomania is a delusional disorder in which a person is firmly convinced that someone, usually of a higher and unattainable status, is in love with them.

This disorder, also known as Clerambault’s syndrome, is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a rare type of delusional disorder.

Symptoms of erotomania

Some of the most common symptoms of erotomania include:

  • Recurrent fantasies about the person who is the object of their delusion.
  • Spending a significant amount of time trying to contact the “loved” person.
  • Trying to get closer to that person to validate their delusional belief.
  • Feeling jealous at the thought that someone else may get close to the person they are obsessed with.
  • Believing that the person is sending them secret messages, dedicating songs to them, or doing anything with them in mind.

How dangerous is erotomania?

When treated properly, erotomania is not dangerous; however, if left untreated, it can lead to social isolation, depression, and emotional distress.

If the obsession reaches the level of physical stalking or constant messaging, it can be harmful.

Treatment for erotomania

The treatment for erotomania may vary depending on the case, but it typically includes cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, antipsychotic medications, stress management techniques, and other therapeutic approaches.
